“Wheelchair Travel Tips”
Wheelchair air travel has got to be one of the most stressful times for anyone traveling. I mean traveling can be stressful enough, but add a physical disability and power wheelchair can equal BAD NEWS…
That is why I have put the together the best of the best travel tips I have ever used.
NUMBER ONE: Don’t leave home without your LOVE HANDLES….(a handy safe way to transfer) see details below. For individuals who are non-ambulatory or fall easily.
NUMBER TWO: Allow yourself extra time where ever you go.
NUMBER THREE: Expect the unexpected.
NUMBER FOUR: If you can, RENT your medical equipment before you reach your destination. Things like, hoyer lifts, slings, shower chairs ETC. Most medical supply places deliver.
NUMBER FIVE: If you have head and neck weakness bring your own manual wheelchair.
NUMBER SIX: Take pictures of your wheelchair before you leave the airport.
NUMBER SEVEN: CHECK YOUR POWER CHAIR ALL THE WAY through to your destination, the less handling by airport personal the better.
NUMBER EIGHT: Create a sign with details about your wheelchair, like how to put it in manual, where to lift and the weight.
NUMBER NINE: and probably the most important, take every removable part off your wheelchair and put it in its own luggage and or carry on, put bolts and small rubber parts in a ziploc baggie and put in your carry on. (HINT: Take pictures or videos of how you are taking everything apart. Makes it easy to refer to when it comes time to put in back together.)
NUMBER TEN: Be resourceful and know sometimes you have to think outside the box.
